Romania's Forest Fund Increased in 2025, Harvested Timber Volume Up by 4.1%

Short: The national forest fund grew by 170 hectares in 2025, according to INS, driven by the reclassification of forested pastures and the inclusion of degraded lands. The volume of harvested timber mass rose by 4.1% compared to 2024.

The area of the national forest fund increased in 2025 by 170 hectares compared to the previous year, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics. The increase was mainly determined by the reclassification of some forested pastures, as well as by the inclusion of degraded or non-forested lands intended for afforestation, in accordance with the provisions of the Forestry Code.

Actual forests represent 97.6% of the total national forest fund, confirming the dominant character of this category in the structure of the country's silvicultural areas. In the same period, the volume of harvested timber mass recorded a 4.1% increase compared to 2024.

From a geographical point of view, the forest fund is concentrated mainly in the Center and North-East regions, which hold 19.2% and 18.2% respectively of the national total. The West, North-West and South-West Oltenia regions also record significant shares, followed, in descending order, by South-Muntenia, South-East and Bucharest-Ilfov.

The largest part of the harvested timber mass comes from the North-East region, which concentrates 28.3% of the total volume harvested nationally. The Center region ranks second, with a share of 22.9%, followed by West and North-West, thus confirming that the mountainous and sub-mountainous areas remain the main sources of forestry exploitation.

Forest regeneration works were carried out on the most extensive areas in the North-East, Center, West and North-West regions. The South-East, South-Muntenia and South-West Oltenia regions recorded similar shares in the total regenerated area, while Bucharest-Ilfov had the smallest contribution in this field.
