Detectives of the Bureau of Economic Security have completed the pre-trial investigation of a Volyn entrepreneur suspected of organizing the illegal export of timber to Poland. The indictment has already been submitted to court.

The suspect has been charged under part 1 of Article 201-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — smuggling of timber prohibited for export outside the customs territory of the country. The article provides for imprisonment for a term of three to five years.

According to the investigation, the timber was purchased in cash from individuals and sole proprietors. The timber was loaded from the territories of the Kamin-Kashyrskyi and Kovel districts of the Volyn region and then prepared for export abroad. Forged documents containing false information were used for customs clearance, including counterfeit certificates of origin, consignment notes and invoices.

During searches at the “Yagodyn” border crossing point and at the suspects’ residences, detectives seized financial and business documents, draft records, electronic media, seals, sawn timber, as well as a truck with a semi-trailer. Separately, over 43 cubic meters of timber valued at approximately 7 thousand euros were confiscated.

The case is being considered as one of the episodes in combating the illegal export of timber across the Ukrainian-Polish border. The court will deliver the final legal assessment of the accused’s actions.
