Growing demand for timber in a time of war requires Ukraine to balance the economy with environmental protection

Short: Demand for timber is growing, driven by the needs of the front line and the budget, which poses challenges for foresters to increase harvesting without harming the environment.

In the current conditions of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the demand for timber has grown significantly. This resource has become vital not only to meet the needs of the frontline, but also to replenish the state budget. This situation poses a challenge to Ukrainian foresters to increase the volume of timber harvesting to meet the public and state interest.

Readiness of Ukrainian forests and environmental challenges

Ukrainian foresters are already reporting their readiness to increase timber harvesting. Regional forestry departments are holding meetings and specifying plans to increase production. However, this strategy requires a discussion of possible environmental consequences. This discussion took place at a recent forum in Zhytomyr, which brought together industry experts, officials, and woodworking businessmen.

The forum discussed various aspects of massive tree felling, and participants noted that it could lead to environmental problems in the future. Environmentalists warned of potential changes in biodiversity and soil erosion that could occur if normal logging regulations are not followed. An important point was the realization of the need to introduce new technologies that would minimize negative environmental impacts.

The discussion emphasized that maintaining the ecological balance is a priority. Participants agreed that ensuring the rational use of forest resources without harming the environment should be the main goal of state policy in this area. This includes controlling darnlyas, restoring forests after deforestation, and using modern processing methods that do not harm the natural environment.

Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, emphasized the role of forests as part of Ukraine's defense shield. According to him, forests play an important role in protecting the borders from enemy encroachment, providing not only materials for defense needs, but also a natural barrier.

Thus, the forum in Zhytomyr has become an important platform for discussing critical issues facing Ukraine in the context of war. The agreement of all parties on the need to preserve the ecological balance and rational use of natural resources is a key step towards sustainable development of the country during the war.
