Vietnam's wood and wood product exports have shown a remarkable surge in December, reaching US$887.4 million. This is a noteworthy 7% increase from November and a significant 19% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has highlighted the impressive rebound of Vietnam’s wood product industry in 2024, following a challenging year in 2023 where exports declined by 16%.
The significant performance of Vietnam's wood exports is underscored by the insights of Ngo Sy Hoai, Vice Chairperson and Secretary General of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association (VIFOREST). He attributed the achievements to various strategic efforts within the industry to adapt and respond to international market demands efficiently. The strong culmination of these efforts is evident in the double-digit growth on a year-over-year basis in December, indicating a robust recovery post-2023 setbacks.
According to ITTO, the rebound in the wood product industry can be mainly attributed to intensified efforts in market diversification and technological advancements in production processes. However, this growth is not without its challenges. Both the European Union and United States markets are increasingly demanding stricter traceability of wood origin, emphasizing sustainable practices. This calls for Vietnam's wood exporters to bolster compliance mechanisms, ensuring sustainability in sourcing and production to maintain their competitive edge in these lucrative markets.
In response to mounting external pressures, VIFOREST is gearing up to implement robust strategies to secure and extend Vietnam’s foothold in the international wood market. One of the top priorities is the enforcement of criteria that promote green growth and digital transformation across the industry. This is aimed at not only meeting international standards but also boosting operational efficiencies and reducing the environmental impact of production processes.
Additionally, there is a prioritized focus on enhancing trade defense capabilities. As the industry faces increasing scrutiny under global trade conditions, such initiatives are intended to protect the interests of Vietnam’s wood exporters and ensure sustained growth. Vietnam’s wood production in 2024 is estimated at 23.3 million cubic meters, a promising increase from 20.8 million cubic meters in 2023. This growth reflects the ongoing expansion and modernization of Vietnam’s wood processing capabilities.
