Ukrainians began mass purchasing firewood already in spring, without waiting for the onset of cold weather. Fuel shipment volumes have already reached levels previously seen only during the winter season.
As of the end of May, nearly 1.1 million cubic meters of firewood were sold to households and social institutions. For comparison: during the same period last year the figure was only 534 thousand cubic meters — meaning current volumes are almost twice as high. The State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” forecasts that 2026 will set a record for firewood consumption — over 3 million cubic meters.
Despite the surge in demand, “Forests of Ukraine” assure that no firewood shortage is expected. The company’s warehouses already hold about 200 thousand cubic meters of stock, and fuel availability is monitored across all forestry units. By the end of the year they plan to harvest an additional 2 million cubic meters of firewood for the population.
Firewood is supplied not only to households but also to public institutions and the defense sector. Since the beginning of the year, more than 800 contracts have been signed for the delivery of 247 thousand cubic meters of wood, of which over 130 thousand cubic meters have already been handed over to customers.
The state enterprise emphasizes that prices for firewood for the population remain below market levels. Provided the fuel and logistics situation stays stable, the cost of firewood will not be changed until the end of the 2026–2027 heating season.
The price depends on the wood species and its heat output. Group I firewood — oak and beech — costs about 1,400 UAH per cubic meter. Group II firewood, including pine and alder, costs about 1,100 UAH. The most affordable are Group III firewood: spruce, fir and soft-leaved species — approximately 950 UAH per cubic meter.
