Austrian sawmill industry struggles with regional storage bottlenecks and transportation problems while demand remains stable

Short: The sawmill industry in Austria is faced with fully utilized warehouses in the south and transport problems, while demand for round sawn timber remains stable.

In the Austrian sawmill industry, there are considerable regional differences in the storage capacities for round sawn timber. In the south of Austria in particular, some of these warehouses are fully utilized. This disparity in storage capacities has a significant impact on the entire supply chain, which brings with it its own complexity and challenges.

Despite the partially fully utilized storage capacities, the demand for needlesawed round timber remains constant. Many mills have responded to the high stock levels and continuing demand by expanding their purchasing radius. This expansion enables them to continue to procure sufficient quantities of timber even when local stocks are exhausted.

However, this increased demand is being held back by problems in the transportation sector. In many regions, there are delays in the transportation of the quantities provided, which is caused by thaws and a lack of available transport capacity. These problems lead to bottlenecks and can significantly extend delivery times.

The transportation problems place an additional burden on the already tense situation in the sawmill industry. Efficient planning and an increase in logistics capacity could help to overcome these challenges and ensure supplies to the mills.

In terms of price trends, the market for round sawn timber is largely stable. Nevertheless, Salzburg and Tyrol recorded slight price increases, which could be due to increased demand or specific regional conditions.

Larch and pine are also enjoying stable demand with unchanged prices. These softwood species continue to be attractive for various applications, which explains their stable market position.

Another important issue is the importance of rapid harvesting measures. For planned harvesting measures, it is strongly recommended that these are carried out quickly in order to avoid quality losses. Delays can result in damage to the timber that significantly reduces its value.

The market for hardwood sawlogs shows a differentiated development. While there is still strong demand for good quality ash and oak, demand for inferior qualities is declining. This is due to seasonal fluctuations as the hardwood season draws to a close, which also has an impact on market demand.

In summary, the sawmill industry in Austria is robust, but faces major logistical challenges. Supply chain efficiency needs to be improved to support the stable demand trend and the industry should develop strategies to proactively respond to regional differences in storage capacity and transportation. However, price stability and concentrated demand for certain types of wood offer a positive outlook for the coming months.
