Hamburg's "roots" timber high-rise combines sustainability, innovation and modern living space

Short: The "roots" project in HafenCity Hamburg is setting standards: a 65-meter-high timber high-rise combines innovative architecture, sustainable construction and social housing with success.

In Hamburg's Hafen-City, Garbe Immobilien has realized the impressive "roots" project, an example of modern, sustainable construction. The timber high-rise stands out not only for its height, but also for its innovative construction and environmentally friendly approach.

The construction of "roots" began in the fourth quarter of 2020 with a considerable investment volume of 140 million euros. This significant investment demonstrates the developer's confidence in innovative and sustainable building concepts. Designed by renowned Hamburg architects Störmer Murphy und Partner, the building was awarded the HafenCity Platinum eco-label. This label stands for high ecological standards and makes it clear that great importance was attached to sustainability and environmentally conscious construction.

Part of the project is an impressive tower that stretches over 65 meters and comprises 19 floors. This architectural masterpiece is complemented by a timber-framed building which, together with the tower, forms a harmonious ensemble. The wooden tower itself is unique, because while the base building is made of reinforced concrete, the tower is largely made of wood. This construction method underlines the commitment to ecological responsibility and innovative architecture.

In total, "roots" offers around 181 residential units on a gross floor area of 36,200 square meters. These include 53 publicly subsidized apartments, which underlines the project's social commitment. These apartments were occupied at the beginning of 2024, reflecting the high demand for affordable housing in the region. In July 2024, the subsidized apartments were sold to Aachener Grundvermögen, a sign that this housing is also secured for the long term.

The sale of the condominiums was also extremely successful. By the end of February 2024, 118 of the 128 available units had been sold. This high demand not only shows the interest in this special type of living, but also the attractiveness of HafenCity as a residential area in Hamburg.

In contemporary architecture, "roots" plays a pioneering role. By using wood as the main material, it sets standards in terms of sustainability and climate-friendly construction. The combination of careful planning, modern architecture and ecological awareness makes "roots" a beacon for future construction projects in urban areas.
