Boix Promotes Sustainable Construction with New CLT Plant in Puig-reig

Short: Boix Group inaugurates a cross-laminated timber plant in Puig-reig, Spain, strengthening the sustainable and efficient construction sector.

The Boix Group, one of the five largest sawmills in Spain, has launched a new cross-laminated timber (CLT) plant in Puig-reig (Barcelona), built with an investment of 40 million euros. This material, which is revolutionizing the construction sector, stands out for its structural properties, energy efficiency, and sustainability, offering a construction system that is "faster and requires less labor."

With over 50 years of history and led by the third generation of the Boix family, the company boasts an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons and employs a workforce of 120 across its two plants in the Berguedà region.

The new facility, spanning 13,000 m² and constructed in just over a year, represents an "unprecedented technological leap in the construction timber sector in Catalonia." The plant incorporates fully digitized technology and processes and features a 5 MW biomass boiler with an electrostatic filter that cuts emissions "in half," according to the company.

Boix produces 185,000 tons of roundwood and 85,000 m³ of sawn timber annually, operating under PEFC and CatForest certifications that ensure traceability and responsible management of natural resources.

The company plays a prominent role in sustainable forest management in Catalonia, overseeing the entire production process—from forest harvesting to the manufacturing of finished products like pallets. The production line has reached its maximum capacity, solidifying the group’s leadership in this segment. This value chain contributes to a circular economy where "every part of the wood is utilized."

Its strategy, based on circularity, innovation, and proximity, enables the company to close the wood production cycle, transforming logs into "value-added products for industry, packaging, and sustainable construction."

Carles Martí, General Director of Boix, emphasizes that "Our goal is not just to manufacture products, but to create value from the forest, with a vision that combines territory, industry, and sustainability." Martí adds that "the wood from our forests is an asset for the country: it improves land management, reduces fire risks, and creates skilled jobs."

The executive stresses the importance of connecting resources: "We have a forest with surplus, an industry that is ready, and a society demanding sustainable materials; now is the time to connect all of this."

With this investment, the Boix Group reinforces its leadership in Catalonia, demonstrating that technological innovation, sustainability, and the circular economy are key factors for the future of the construction timber sector.
