French Carpenters Who Restored Notre-Dame to Begin Restoring Rocket-Damaged Building in Lviv

Short: The French association “Carpenters Without Borders,” which took part in the restoration of Notre-Dame, will restore the roof of the historic building at 3 Soborna Square in Lviv, damaged by a Russian missile strike.

The historic building at 3 Soborna Square in Lviv, damaged by a Russian missile strike, will be restored with the participation of French specialists. The association “Carpenters Without Borders” has been engaged for the restoration works — the press service of the Lviv City Council announced this on 11 June.

The French craftsmen are widely known in professional circles: they took part in restoring the wooden structures of Notre-Dame Cathedral after the devastating fire of 2019. In Lviv, the specialists will restore the roof of the damaged building, applying the same traditional woodworking techniques used in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame.

According to representatives of the association, the Lviv project is viewed by them both as a professional challenge and as an expression of solidarity with Ukraine. During their visit, the French restorers inspected the damaged site and outlined approaches to the upcoming works. They also visited other buildings affected by shelling — on Soborna Square as well as on Melnyka and Konovaltsia streets.

Following the negotiations, the Lviv authorities and the French association agreed on long-term cooperation.

“The parties agreed to work on joint projects for the restoration of damaged historic heritage and the training of a new generation of restorers,” the press service of the Lviv City Council stated.

The building at 3 Soborna Square was damaged on 24 March 2026, when Russian forces attacked Lviv with Shahed-type strike drones. As a result of the strike, an apartment building in the Sykhiv district and several buildings in the Halytskyi district were affected. One of the drones struck the ensemble of the Bernardine monastery and the adjacent residential building, an architectural monument.
