Spain leads the European timber market thanks to its vast forest mass and rising prices

Short: In 2024, Spain exceeded timber auctions by 105 million euros; León stands out for its quality, boosting the economic potential of the country's timber sector.

Spain has established itself as one of the countries with the greatest forest mass in the European Union, being only surpassed by the Nordic countries. This vast natural resource has allowed the generation of significant income through the exploitation and sale of wood, placing Spain in a relevant place within the European timber market.

In 2024, timber auctions in Spain reached a value of 105 million euros, with a utilization of four million cubic meters. These figures demonstrate not only the abundance of the resource, but also the market's interest in Spanish timber.

Boom in prices in the timber market

According to the national platform Maderea, the prices of various species of pine, such as Scots pine, pinaster pine and maritime pine, have experienced a notable increase, in a range of 5% to 10%. This increase in prices reflects growing demand and a positive valuation in the market. Other types of wood, such as eucalyptus and poplar, have also been well received, suggesting a diversification in market preferences.

The increase in prices has resulted in an increase in the value of forestry auctions, which totaled 81.2 million euros, with a final estimated sale price of 105.6 million. This 30% increase from the initial price highlights the competitive environment and the interest in the quality wood produced in Spain. These values not only generate economic benefits, but also underline the potential of the forestry sector as an economic driver for the country.

In terms of the distribution of tenders, the province of León stands out for its performance in the forestry sector. Although they participated in only 17 tenders, much fewer than other provinces such as Navarra, Cantabria, Soria or Segovia, León's production has been highly valued in the market.

León's leadership in the timber market

The high quality of León's timber has been demonstrated by the fact that it generates more income despite the lower number of tenders. The province stood out by leading with more than 10 million euros generated from its timber auctions. This result is attributable both to the quality of the product and to its valuation in the markets, which place it as one of the most appreciated in Spain.

The timber sector in León has been able to make efficient use of its resources, becoming a benchmark within the sector. This success is not only measured in sales figures, but also in the consolidation of León as an important center for timber production. Product quality, together with efficient management, has allowed the province to stand out in a highly competitive context.

As demand for quality wood continues to grow, the economic potential of Spanish forestry areas is becoming increasingly evident. The sector's ability to adapt to market trends and maintain high quality standards will be crucial to sustaining this growth and ensuring a positive economic impact in the regions involved.
