CNP Assurances, a key player in the French insurance sector, has announced its ambition to certify 100% of its forests to FSC® standards by 2030. This initiative aims not only to guarantee sustainable forest management, but also to strengthen the resilience of forests in the face of current environmental challenges such as climate change.
With over 50,000 hectares of forest in France, CNP Assurances is one of the country's largest private forest owners. This vast area of woodland is at the heart of the company's commitment to sustainability. Responsible management of such an expanse is crucial to preserving the environment, and requires a thoughtful, strategic approach.
Indeed, the decisions taken today regarding the management of these forests will have long-term repercussions on biodiversity and climate. By opting for FSC® certification, CNP Assurances is committed to meeting rigorous standards aimed at ensuring environmentally-friendly forest management. This includes the preservation of natural habitats, the promotion of biodiversity and a commitment to a responsible timber industry.
Until recently, CNP Assurances' forests were certified to PEFC standards, a certification that has existed since the 2000s. However, the company decided to take a further step by adopting the FSC® standard, recognized for its more demanding criteria in terms of sustainable management. Since 2024, some 3,400 hectares of its forests have been under the FSC label. This transition reflects a desire to take our environmental commitment even further, by adopting practices that promote greater resilience of forest ecosystems to the impacts of climate change.
The FSC label is widely recognized around the world for its rigorous and effective sustainability standards. By moving towards this more demanding certification, CNP Assurances is demonstrating its determination to align its activities with current and future ecological challenges. This move is part of a broader environmental strategy that encompasses innovative and adaptive forest management practices.
The move towards FSC® certification complements the company's efforts to ensure that its forestry activities are ecologically responsible, while contributing to climate change mitigation. By pursuing this objective, CNP Assurances also hopes to positively influence the timber industry in France by proving that sustainability and commercial success can go hand in hand.
