BiH Ranks Fifth in Export of Upholstered Furniture to the EU

Short: BiH exports upholstered furniture to the EU worth over 100 million KM (fifth place) and mattresses worth around 10 million euros. Advantages include market proximity, workforce, and a stable exchange rate, while growth is hindered by a small economy and a lack of large companies.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has already established itself as an important supplier of upholstered furniture to the European Union, with additional room for growth. Currently, the export of upholstered furniture to the EU exceeds 100 million KM, placing BiH in fifth place among exporters in this market. Mattress exports amount to around 10 million euros, further confirming the sector's potential, particularly due to its strong export orientation. At the same time, the industry is constrained by structural factors and high fragmentation.

The EU remains the primary export market for domestic producers, mainly due to proximity and short delivery times. BiH's geographical position, close to large markets such as Germany and Italy, reduces logistics costs and facilitates integration into European supply chains. Germany is one of the most important export markets for both upholstered furniture and mattresses, while Italy is among the leading destinations for furniture exports. Neighboring countries and Nordic markets also play a significant role, enabling broader regional presence and customer diversification.

The competitiveness of the domestic industry further relies on the availability of a skilled workforce, which is an increasingly important factor in production requiring precision and flexibility. A stable exchange rate tied to the euro provides additional security in international transactions and long-term contracts.

On the other hand, the sector faces limitations. The small size of the country and its market, with around three million inhabitants, can restrict the scale of industrial development. Consolidation is slow, and the presence of large companies is relatively limited, which is why many producers focus on niche markets and subcontracting.

Nevertheless, individual examples show that competitiveness can be built through specialization and alignment with EU standards. The company „Eksport siti“ from Prnjavor produces almost exclusively on order and uses certified materials of European origin, while being fully export-oriented toward the EU market. In the mattress and bed segment, the company „Moj san“ from Kakanj successfully combines export and domestic sales, while Sarajevo-based „Sinkro“ has become part of a large European group, demonstrating that certain production capacities in BiH are attractive for acquisitions.

These examples confirm that export orientation, custom production, certified materials, and integration into EU value chains strengthen competitiveness. Although the industry as a whole remains fragmented, individual companies clearly demonstrate the capability and ambition to successfully compete in the European upholstered furniture market.
