Despite the challenges caused by calamitous events affecting oak trees, oak wood achieved record prices at the Lower Franconia Forestry Association's auction. This remarkable development shows that demand for high-quality oak wood remains high, regardless of the difficulties facing the forestry industry as a result of pests and diseases.
A total of 783.40 cubic meters (m³) of individual logs and 82.54 m³ of lots were sold at this year's auction. The auction took place at three different storage sites, with oak being the dominant tree species. This underscores the importance of oak wood in regional forestry and its economic value.
Six forestry cooperatives from the region took part in the tender. These were Arnstein, Haßberge, Kitzingen, Neustadt-Uffenheim, Rimpar, and Würzburg. Each of these cooperatives contributed to the success of the event and ensured that oak wood played a prominent role in the offering. The participation of these cooperatives also demonstrates the strong networking and cooperation within the region to meet the challenges facing forestry.
The average price achieved for oak wood was an impressive 630 euros per cubic metre, which was significantly higher than the previous year's level. This price increase reflects the high quality of the wood on offer and the continuing strong demand for oak wood. Oak wood has established itself primarily in the construction and furniture sectors and is valued for its robustness and aesthetic appeal.
In contrast, the picture for ash wood was mixed, with an average price of €252 per cubic metre. This price difference highlights the different market positioning of the two types of wood and the varying demand. Ash wood faces similar challenges due to calamities that affect the stock and thus the supply.
The successful completion of the tender is further evidence of the continuing high demand for high-quality oak wood. Despite the difficult conditions caused by pest infestation and disease, oak wood remains a sought-after resource. This also demonstrates buyers' confidence in regional forestry and its ability to deliver quality and reliability.
Overall, this development underscores the resilience and adaptability of the regional forestry sectors. The synergies between the participating operating communities and their effective cooperation ensure that valuable raw materials such as oak wood can be successfully marketed despite adverse conditions. This positive dynamic not only contributes to the stability of the local economy, but also ensures the future viability of forestry practices in the region.
