In the construction of Pronk Bouw's new office in Warmenhuizen, a unique step has been taken in the field of timber construction in the Netherlands. For the first time, an innovative timber structure has been realized without the usual beams as floor supports. While CLT floors (cross laminated timber) typically rest on wooden beams, in this project, they are placed directly on the columns. This can truly be called a first in the industry.
This remarkable design was made possible by timber specialist DERIX, who applied the advanced Spider system from Rothoblaas. This system consists of a steel connector, known as the Spider, which evenly transfers the forces from the floor to the underlying column with its legs. The steel centerpiece of the Spider ensures a safe and controlled transfer of forces, preventing the risk of the column being pierced by concentrated floor loads. Additional reinforcement is provided by diagonal screws in the floor slab, making the structure even safer.
Furthermore, the construction utilized TC Fusion technology. This technique allows CLT elements to be firmly and securely connected to each other without the need for additional columns under every floor section. This significantly reduces the number of vertical supports required, keeping the building's interior open and spacious. The result is a transparent and flexible design, with minimal visible structural components and maximum design freedom for architects and users.
This approach brings several structural and architectural advantages. By eliminating beams, fewer materials are needed, which is both efficient and sustainable. Additionally, designers can more easily vary the layout of spaces since they have fewer constraints from obstructive supports or load-bearing beams.
