Firewood Market in 2025: How to Avoid Fraud and Not Overpay

Short: Heating Private Homes in Ukraine: How to Choose Reliable and Cost-Effective Firewood While Complying with Legislation and Supporting Ecology.

In Ukraine, wood remains one of the most popular types of fuel for heating private homes and cottages. At the same time, experts emphasize: firewood should only be purchased from verified suppliers or harvested independently on legal grounds.

The country has an official system for controlling the harvesting and sale of wood. The safest way to buy fuel is to contact state forestry enterprises or forest management companies that operate under the State Enterprise «Forests of Ukraine».

A convenient tool for legal purchase is the state online service «DrovaYe», where users can place an order, pay for it online, and have it delivered to their homes. This guarantees the legal origin of the wood and a transparent price.

For those planning to harvest firewood themselves, a mandatory requirement is to have a forest permit — a document that grants the right to legal logging. Its absence is considered a violation and can lead to significant fines or even criminal liability. Illegal logging or storage of firewood can cost tens of thousands of hryvnias, and in some cases, may result in imprisonment.

In 2025, the cost of firewood depends on several factors: the type of wood, region, processing, and delivery. Split firewood is more expensive than unsplit, as it requires additional processing. Additionally, if the supplier is located far away, this increases the final cost of the order. Some forestry enterprises offer bundled firewood in crates — this is convenient for storage but also affects the price.

Hardwood species such as oak, beech, or hornbeam cost between 1,800 and 2,600 UAH per cubic meter. In the Dymer Forestry, unsplit pine firewood is sold at 1,291.37 UAH per m³ (length 1.9 m), in Makariv Forestry — birch at 1,451.78 UAH, and aspen at 1,108.63 UAH. In the Slovechanske Forestry, split pine with a log length of 0.33 m costs 2,643.65 UAH per m³.

Ukrainian forestry enterprises offer a wide range of wood species — elm, maple, birch, cherry, linden, aspen, and others. Hardwood species burn longer but are more expensive, while softwood species are cheaper but burn out faster.

Experts recommend buying firewood exclusively from official suppliers. Before payment, it is worth checking the origin of the wood, the availability of permit documents, and clarifying the actual cost, including delivery.
