A large-scale forest fire has been ongoing in the border area of Chernihiv Oblast since May 5, which arose as a result of Russia's military aggression. The approximate burned area is about 2,400 hectares, however, it is currently impossible to fully extinguish the fire due to the complex security situation.
The ignition has covered the forest plantations of the Yelinsky and Tykhonovytsky forestries of the Koryukivka forestry of the State Enterprise «Forests of Ukraine». Part of the territories is potentially contaminated with explosive objects, which significantly limits access to the fire centers. In view of this, the area of the fire may be clarified as the situation develops.
Extinguishing is complicated not only by mine danger, but also by the constant military threat. Enemy drones are detected over the fire area, which pose a direct danger to forest protection workers and DSNS rescuers. The company's tractors operate under the cover of electronic warfare means — since the enemy attacks any equipment in the fire zone. Under such conditions, the main task is not to completely extinguish the fire, but to contain it in accessible areas.
All forces of the forest protection have been involved in firefighting works. Additional mineralized strips are being laid on safe areas and equipment is being used to prevent further spread of the fire. A coordination meeting took place with the participation of the military, DSNS, local authorities, and representatives of forestry — the services jointly determine further actions under conditions of military risk.
The key priority remains the protection of settlements in the frontline strip. The main efforts are currently directed at localizing the fire and preventing its spread to the nearest villages.
