State Enterprise «Forests of Ukraine» announced the implementation of a new approach to utilizing logging residues, the volume of which reaches about 1.2 million cubic meters annually. This involves shredding logging waste into chips directly at harvesting sites. The company notes that this solution simultaneously ensures additional revenue, reduces fire risks, and simplifies the process of forest regeneration.
According to the enterprise's estimates, a significant portion of logging residues has long remained unused due to low demand. The main reason was the high cost of collection and transportation: removing residues in their raw form often made further processing economically unfeasible.
The situation is changing thanks to the transition to shredding residues into chips directly at logging sites. This approach allows for the production of a finished product with stable market demand, effectively turning logging waste into a marketable commodity.
The commercial attractiveness of the project is also confirmed by pricing indicators. According to the enterprise, the average market value of wood chips is around 1200 UAH per cubic meter. By the end of the current year, the «Capital Forest Office» branch plans to generate up to 4 million UAH in revenue from its sale.
For operations directly at logging sites, a Pezzolato PTH-500 shredder paired with a John Deere tractor is used. The declared productivity of the equipment is up to 40 cubic meters of logging residues per shift or up to 100 cubic meters of firewood.
«Forests of Ukraine» also emphasizes the environmental and safety benefits of the new approach. Shredding residues on-site reduces the accumulation of flammable materials, which in turn lowers the risk of forest fires. Additionally, cleared areas are easier to prepare for soil cultivation and allow for quicker planting of new forest crops.
The enterprise places particular emphasis on the energy aspect. Using wood chips as an alternative fuel helps reduce dependence on fossil energy resources and supports the implementation of a waste-free logging model.
In conclusion, «Forests of Ukraine» states that processing logging residues into chips is a comprehensive solution that simultaneously enhances the economic efficiency of logging while strengthening environmental and fire safety.
