In 2023, the Lviv region suffered a significant ecological disaster — the loss of 38 hectares of forests. This tragedy was driven by several factors, the primary ones being pests, which destroyed 37 hectares of green heritage, and unfavorable weather conditions, which claimed an additional 1 hectare. Forests, which serve not only as a source of oxygen but also as a home for numerous species of flora and fauna, sustained severe damage that could have long-term consequences.

At the beginning of 2024, alarming signs were detected — new outbreaks of pests and diseases emerged, threatening even larger areas of the region’s forests. In total, these outbreaks cover 1,700 hectares. Of these, 1,100 hectares are affected by pest infestations, highlighting their dominant impact on the forests. This once again underscores the importance of immediate attention to the problem.

Forest diseases, spreading across 600 hectares, cannot be ignored either. They also pose a serious threat to the ecosystem, as without timely intervention, diseases can rapidly spread, gradually leading to even greater losses of healthy plantations.

These figures indicate a dangerous trend that could significantly worsen the ecological situation if immediate measures are not taken. The information gathered throughout 2023, combined with initial data from 2024, makes it clear that this problem is systemic and requires a comprehensive approach to resolution.

To preserve the natural wealth of Lviv’s forests, it is essential not only to identify existing problems but also to actively prevent potential threats. Recently announced data emphasizes the urgency of developing and implementing plans to combat pests and diseases.
