The Polish forestry and wood industry maintains stability despite a challenging market situation – according to data from the Ministry of Climate and Environment (MKiŚ). Wood production in the country remains at a level similar to last year, yet the prices of the raw material have significantly dropped.
“Wood prices are scraping the bottom, which is a result of an oversupply of this raw material on the market, caused by reduced exports outside the EU,” the Ministry points out in its latest analysis. As emphasized, the limitation of exports has contributed to an increased supply on the domestic market, putting pressure on prices.
According to MKiŚ data, from January to September 2024, wood exports outside the European Union decreased by nearly half. The Ministry explains that these changes are the result of global trends in raw material trade and new legal regulations in force on international markets.
In response to the worsening price situation, the Ministry has implemented measures aimed at increasing domestic demand. “In 2024, steps were taken that include promoting wood as an ecological building material and supporting innovation in processing,” the Ministry stated in a release.
The Ministry also announces the development of the National Forestry Program, which will include strategies for sustainable forest resource management and adaptation of the sector to new climate challenges.
Experts emphasize that despite temporary difficulties, Poland has a solid foundation for the further development of the wood industry. An increase in domestic wood consumption and technological innovations could, in the long term, contribute to restoring balance in the market.
