AVEBIOM publishes Q4 2024 indices showing stabilization of solid biofuels prices

Short: Prices of solid biofuels, such as wood pellets, show signs of recovery after the energy crises of 2022, with stabilization key to competitiveness and sustainability.

The Spanish Association of Biomass Energy Valorization (AVEBIOM) has launched the Solid Biofuels Price Indices (BPI) for the fourth quarter of 2024. These indices provide an up-to-date picture of the solid biofuels market, enabling consumers and industry professionals to make informed decisions.

Price stabilization in the solid biofuels market

Following the volatile situation in the global energy market in 2022, prices for solid biofuels, particularly wood pellets and olive pits, have begun to stabilize. This balance in prices is a positive sign of recovery from the fluctuations caused by the global energy crisis. Wood pellets, which are the most demanded solid biofuel, have shown a particular downward trend throughout 2024.

The decline in wood pellet prices is most evident in bulk formats, where significant declines have been recorded. Although the solid biofuels market is far from homogeneous, the recent stabilization of the 15 kg bag of wood pellets signals a normalization trend, further strengthening the post-crisis recovery. This stabilization is crucial to maintain the competitiveness of pellets vis-à-vis other energy sources.

With the average annual price per 15 kg bag set at €5.25, variability is minimal in the last quarter, with only a 0.3% increase. This adjustment contrasts sharply with the peaks of €6.50 per bag that were reached during the most critical period of the energy crisis in 2022. The slight increase in the last quarter can be attributed to a combination of factors, including stabilizing demand and supply adjustments.

The solid biofuels market appears to be consolidating as we overcome the aftermath of past crises. This consolidation involves not only price stabilization, but also a strengthening of commercial relationships within the sector. These improvements are critical to reinforcing energy security and long-term sustainability, highlighting the resilience of solid biofuels in the face of global uncertainties.
