Major Agricultural Companies Urge EU Not to Delay Law to Protect Forests

Major agri-food companies, including well-known giants Nestle, Ferrero, and Olam Agri, have appealed to the European Union with a call not to indefinitely postpone the adoption of a law aimed at protecting global forests. Representatives of these companies emphasize that delays in its implementation could significantly threaten not only the state of forests but also accelerate the negative consequences of climate change.

The European Union, in considering the draft law, hoped to ensure the protection of forests from unjustified deforestation linked to the production of certain products, such as palm oil. However, serious obstacles have emerged in the path of its implementation, which could lead to a delay in its launch by as much as 12 months. The primary issue lies in the readiness of the information technology systems required to enforce such a law. This situation has already raised concerns among agri-food companies, who stress the importance of prompt action by the EU in adopting the necessary measures.

On one hand, the European Union acknowledges the need to improve technological support for the law’s implementation; on the other hand, it faces demands from agricultural corporations to immediately introduce preventive measures to avoid further degradation of ecosystems.
