Metsäyhtiö UPM continues to temporarily lay off workers at its paper mills in Jamsjankoski, Kuusankoski, Lappeenranta and Rauma, Kauppalehti reports.
According to a report by Kauppalehti, UPM informed its employees about plans for temporary layoffs in the summer.
In March, UPM announced the start of negotiations regarding changes at its sawmill, pulp and paper mills.
UPM Communication Papers chief operating officer Antti Hermonen explains in Kauppalehti that the reason for the temporary layoffs is a long-term decline in demand for printing and writing paper, as well as a general weakening of the economic situation. He notes that current demand for paper is weak, and selling prices declined in the second quarter.
According to negotiations, temporary layoffs at UPM factories can last up to 90 days, but in practice such periods usually last only a week, Kauppalehti reports. Temporary layoffs at paper mills are planned from the beginning of September to the end of February next year.
