Short: Ukraine and Germany signed a Joint Statement of Intent on cooperation in forestry at Green Week in Berlin. The agreement provides for support for the National Forest Inventory, adaptation to climate change, exchange of expertise, and a coordination council for 5 years.

Ukraine and Germany have strengthened cooperation in the field of sustainable forestry by signing a Joint Statement of Intent on forestry partnership during the international Green Week (Grüne Woche) exhibition in Berlin. The agreement aims to support the development of a modern, environmentally balanced and economically viable forestry sector in Ukraine, aligned with European standards and focused on the protection of natural resources.

The document builds on many years of bilateral cooperation and is intended to support the modernization of Ukraine’s forestry sector. It was signed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Regional Identity.

The Ukrainian side emphasizes that the partnership provides access to European expertise, modern technologies and advanced approaches to forest management. The cooperation is also seen as an important step toward strengthening the country’s resilience and aligning Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards.

A key focus of the agreement is the implementation of Ukraine’s National Forest Inventory and efforts to enhance the climate resilience of the forestry sector. These measures are expected to improve forest resource accounting and support the sector’s adaptation to climate change.

The agreement предусматриває joint work on forestry policies consistent with European norms, support for the use of National Forest Inventory data, the introduction of environmentally safe technologies, and initiatives to improve the economic efficiency of forest management.

Implementation will be supported through the exchange of scientific and technical information, joint training activities, expert involvement and collaborative projects. A Coordination Council will be established to set priorities, approve annual work plans and oversee implementation.

Germany will provide expert, technical and financial assistance, including support from international specialists, while Ukraine will be responsible for operational coordination. The agreement is set for an initial five-year period with the possibility of extension and is expected to contribute to Ukraine’s deeper integration into the European political space and to strengthening its environmental and climate resilience.
