Germany Supports Forest Management in Ukraine

With the support of the German government, the Ukrainian State Forest Project Association «Ukrderzhlisproekt» has received new all-wheel-drive SUVs for fieldwork, as well as modern computer equipment. This assistance is aimed at enhancing the mobility of field teams and the quality of forest management data processing, particularly in the context of preparing for the implementation of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) starting in 2027.

The State Forest Agency notes that updating the technical base will significantly improve both the speed and accuracy of collecting and analyzing forest management information. This, in turn, is expected to positively impact the pace and quality of preparing materials that are crucial for implementing reforms in the forestry sector.

According to the Head of the State Forest Agency, Viktor Smal, the received support will facilitate the transition to close-to-nature forestry, particularly in the mountain forests of the Carpathian region. The agency emphasizes that such changes are impossible without high-quality and timely data collected directly in the field and processed using modern digital tools.

Special emphasis has been placed on preparing to meet the requirements of the EUDR — the European Deforestation Regulation, which will come into effect in 2027. High-quality forest management materials are considered a fundamental prerequisite for compliance with future European requirements.

Partners also state their commitment to continued cooperation with Ukraine. Support for the forestry sector will be long-term and will include not only technical assistance but also funding for strategic planning. In particular, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany plans to provide Ukraine with 400,000 USD for the development of strategic forest management.
