Sport logging, an energetic and technical discipline, is attracting increasing attention in France. This art of cutting wood, not only quickly but also with precision, is distinguished by its spectacular and physical nature. Although the sport is more associated with regions such as Canada and New Zealand, where forest-dependent activities are predominant, it is beginning to make its mark in France, notably at regional events.
In the heart of Finistère, the Lycée du Nivot in Lopérec is positioning itself as a major player in this field in Brittany. At the Agri Deiz festival in Quimper, held on March 15 and 16, 2025, sport logging was given pride of place. The event bears witness to the growing popularity of this unique art form. The festival, dedicated to agricultural innovations and traditions, provided an ideal showcase to promote this activity, which is still little-known in France.
Among the participants, Titouan and Théo, two passionate 16-year-olds, shone with their commitment. These two teenagers demonstrate that the new generation is ready to embrace demanding sports and perpetuate dynamic traditions. They embody a youthful spirit full of energy and initiative, ready to take on physical disciplines and embrace the values of hard work and perseverance.
Nevertheless, the safety of participants is paramount. During competitions, competitors are equipped with effective protection, such as chain mail, to prevent potential injury when using cutting tools. This precaution not only ensures their physical safety, but also helps to reinforce discipline and respect for the rules of the sport.
The growth of sport logging in Western France is largely due to local initiatives such as Team Beurre Salé. This club, the only one of its kind in the region, brings together some 15 students aged 16 to 18 from the Lycée du Nivot. Thanks to their enthusiasm and intensive training, these young competitors are the regional powerhouse of this emerging sport.
Founded on the values of solidarity and performance, Team Beurre Salé is a perfect illustration of a club that not only promotes a sport, but also creates a genuine spirit of teamwork and camaraderie among its members. The club's dynamism is attracting attention and prompting other establishments to consider similar initiatives.
Although sport logging in France first saw the light of day in the 2000s, it remains a confidential activity, with only nine clubs listed in the whole country. The discipline is still in its infancy, and requires the support of local players if it is to expand and become more firmly rooted in the French sporting fabric.
At the Lycée du Nivot, the support of Pierre-Yves Papart, a teacher with a passion for this discipline, is crucial. His involvement in coaching this sport as part of the forestry curriculum is tangible proof of the educational value he places on this activity. He guides and inspires young people, offering them lessons that go beyond the academic, and instilling in them essential values such as endurance and respect for nature.
The future of sport logging in France looks bright, driven by pioneers such as Team Beurre Salé and events like the Agri Deiz festival. Thanks to the energy and determination of young people, this sport could soon find its place among the most exciting disciplines on the French sporting scene.
