The organization Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is implementing new forest management standards in Poland. Among the key changes is the need to improve working conditions for forest workers.
Derzlis, which is the largest supplier of wood raw materials in Poland, is returning to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, as "PB" reports. However, they will soon be assessed against the new standards, which will come into effect in a few weeks. It is important to note that the FSC organization began testing these standards back in 2018.
One of the main changes is the new definition of a forest worker. Karolina Tymorek, director of FSC in Poland, emphasized that "certified forests in Poland will be managed in accordance with EU requirements, and at the same time will remain a stable and sustainable source of raw materials for the wood processing industry." The definition of worker will now also include people employed in forestry. At the same time, the concept of a subsistence minimum is being introduced for these workers, as noted by Marek Rjonca, FSC forestry coordinator. The new standards will enter into force on October 1, but the transition period will last until the end of September 2025.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a global non-profit organization that issues certificates that certify that forests are managed for the benefit of nature, local communities and forest workers. Many large furniture companies, such as IKEA and Jysk, require their contractors to supply products exclusively from FSC-certified wood.
