As reported by Ukrinform, The Guardian reports on this.

The fire in the north-eastern regions of Evros and Alexandroupolis, which caused the death of 20 people, has been raging for the ninth day.

The fire destroyed huge areas of the forest and burned houses in the vicinity of the city of Alexandroupolis. 77 thousand hectares of land were burned.

On the northwestern outskirts of the Greek capital, another fire has been burning for several days, destroying houses and the national park on Mount Parnita.

The third big fire started on Saturday on the island of Andros. It is suspected that it was caused by lightning strikes.

Over the past week, Greece has been suffering from dozens of fires breaking out daily due to gale-force winds and a hot, dry summer. On Saturday, firefighters extinguished 122 fires.

Germany, Sweden, Croatia and Cyprus sent planes. Dozens of firefighters from Romania, France, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Albania, Slovakia and Serbia are helping to fight the elements.

The causes of the two largest fires in Greece have not yet been established. Officials said they suspect arson or negligence in some cases.

By Friday, fire officials had arrested 163 people on charges related to the fires, including more than a hundred for negligence and more than two dozen for arson.
