Wisdome Stockholm – pushing the boundaries of wooden construction

23 stycznia 2024

Wisdome Stockholm, an innovative scientific experience arena, stands as a pioneering example of sustainable and climate-smart construction using wood. Unveiled on December 9, 2023, as an integral part of Sweden's National Museum of Science and Technology, this landmark project redefines possibilities in wooden architecture.

The National Museum envisioned transforming 1,325 square meters of its Djurgården courtyard in Stockholm into a hub for lifelong learning and civic engagement. Central to this vision was the ambitious goal of pushing the boundaries of wood construction. Stora Enso, the main partner and wood products supplier, collaborated closely with Blumer Lehmann to bring this vision to life.

Wisdome Stockholm boasts a distinctive design, featuring a wooden building with an impressive vaulted roof. At its core lies a globe-shaped dome theatre with a 22-meter diameter, hosting a cutting-edge 3D cinema equipped with a spherical screen.

Jessika Szyber, Business Development Manager at Stora Enso, highlights the project's innovative use of standard industrial products like CLT and LVL elements from the Sylva by Stora Enso range. This allowed for the creation of the asymmetrical structure without compromising the remarkable design.

The roof, a free-form structure with spans of 26 by 48 meters, forms a grid shell made up of five layers of LVL, totaling 20 km in 2,500 parts. Connected by 3,600 wooden dowels, the spherical dome comprises 277 unique CLT triangles. The wood, sourced from sustainably managed forests in Sweden and Finland, stores a total of 1,178 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Lars Völkel, Executive Vice President of Stora Enso's Wood Products division, emphasizes Wisdome Stockholm as a groundbreaking wooden architectural marvel. Wood's role in combating climate change, offering CO2 storage, and facilitating sustainable construction is showcased in this project. The building, open to the public since December 9, 2023, invites visitors to experience wood in a new light, providing a sense of forest, awe, and civic pride at the heart of Stockholm.
