The Western Interregional Department of Forestry and Hunting's Head, Anatoly Deineka, recently met with representatives of the public union "World Wide Fund for Nature" WWF-Ukraine. The meeting aimed to cooperate and assist in developing the Platform for Forest Restoration in Ukraine. The press service of the Western Interregional Directorate of Forestry and Hunting reported this.
Specialists from the Western Interregional Administration of LMG and the Carpathian Forestry Office of the State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" also attended the meeting. Hanna Lobchenko, project manager of the "Forests" direction of WWF-Ukraine, presented the work on the development of the Forest Restoration Platform. She explained how the information filling of the Web Platform would work.
The development of the platform involves cooperation and interaction among different groups, creating an opportunity to attract financial and human resources, join forces and promote the restoration of Ukraine's forests on a scientific basis, taking into account the needs of post-war reconstruction and climate change forecasts. They chose the unique Lviv region with its various natural conditions as the pilot region. Further expansion of the Platform will also apply to other regions of Ukraine.
Anatoliy Deineka noted the considerable experience of the foresters in the Lviv region in the management and organization of forestry. Foresters based their principles on forestry close to nature and the cultivation of biologically stable and productive plantations. Representatives of the public and business structures support environmental initiatives related to the creation of forests and the increase of forest cover in the region. The creation of the Platform should become an interesting tool for the interaction of all interested parties in the implementation of forest restoration activities.
The Forest Restoration Platform will contain information about the forest areas that need restoration, including relief, type of forest vegetation conditions, predominant tree species, among additional information. Importantly, the platforms future benefits will reflect the amount of carbon sequestered, other ecological services, and beneficial properties of the future forest. The Platform will also present the regulatory and legal framework for reforestation and afforestation.
Representatives of the public union "World Wide Fund for Nature" WWF-Ukraine visited the "Lviv Forestry" branch of the State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" to get acquainted with typical management plans for the creation of forest crops and the practical experience of foresters in afforestation.
WWF-Ukraine and the Open Tech, a charitable crowdsourcing program from SoftServe, work together to create a Platform for the Restoration of Forests of Ukraine, supporting the President's initiative "Large-scale Afforestation of Ukraine." The online platform will help restore and increase the area of plantations, determine the most suitable areas for reproduction of forests based on a scientific approach, including taking into account climate changes and environmental safety requirements.
