The Effis platform (European Forest Fire Information System), which has been part of the European Union's Copernicus Emergency Management Services program since 2015, provides near-real-time information on forest fires in the European, Mediterranean and North African regions. According to the latest data, the situation with the fires in Calabria at the beginning of August is quite alarming. Between August 5 and 12, hundreds of hectares of forests burned in Calabria. In the province of Catanzaro, only on August 10, 9 hectares of forest were destroyed.
The most serious situations of recent days are observed in Kozenets and Vibon. In the province of Cosenza, more than 300 hectares have burned as a result of 19 recorded events (one of the largest is the fire in Castrovillari, which approached residential areas). In Vibon, three fires destroyed 62 hectares of forest (fires in Parghelia and Dinam lasted more than one day). In the province of Crotone, three fires were recorded on August 9, which covered 35 hectares of forest territory; in the province of Reggio, 26 hectares were destroyed as a result of eight events that occurred in the last week.
Calabria remains on an unpleasant "pedestal" among Italian regions in terms of the number of destroyed forests.
