Poland allows timber from Belarus into the EU using false documents

27 Mar 2024

An investigation conducted by the Belarusian Investigative Center, the Schemes project of Radio Liberty and Gazeta Wyborcza revealed that after the imposition of sanctions from Belarus, wood imports from Kazakhstan to the EU doubled. Thus, according to Eurostat, in 2022, wood goods worth 14 million euros were imported from Kazakhstan, and in 2023 this figure increased almost five times - to 68 million euros. An analysis of the contract between the Kazakh Nurr-electro and the Polish PLRBL showed that the signatures and seals on it were forged. Representatives of both companies declined to comment on the situation.

Market sources indicate that the wood was sent from a Belarusian company owned by Oleg Yanovich to the owner of PLRBL.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this is not a subject of their competence, but the Polish Customs - that they cannot check all declarations. The Home Office has launched a fact-finding investigation but has refrained from commenting further.
